Osteoporosis ( named OP) is a systemic skeletal disease which mainly through osteopenia and bone
tissue fiber structure degradation induced feature of of bone brittleness and fracture risk increased.
Now it already be the 7th of the world’s common disease incidence which has been closely concerned.
For the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) mainly emphasis on body enanthrope with whole
modulation and have huge advantage to prevention and treatment this illness. OP belongs the ” atrophic
debility of bones”, “heumatism” in TCM. In TCM believe the OP illness induced by kidney deficiency and
damage of essence. Usually through to invigorate the kidney and essence replenishment, trengthen bone
to cure it. The combination blend for Epimedium and Ligustri Lucidi Fructus is founded by Professor
HuiGuangXu who pay much attention with 30 years clinical experience. The blend ratio with 4:3 as the
bronchial remission in patients with drug in clinical. And this study get the results that the blend of
Epimedium and Ligustri Lucidi Fructus make strong protect effect on abnormal bone metabolism in asthma
model rats included by hormone treatment intervention.It reminds this blend maybe have the function of
antagonism to the OP. Many studies already showed the monomer of epimedium or Ligustri Lucidi Fructus
or their respective blend have effective function on treat the OP. But not have any research or study on the
blend of epimedium and Ligustri Lucidi Fructus. This study mainly focus on effect of these two ingredients
separately and their blend on osteoporosis rats induced by retinoic acid.

In this study, using 60 three month old males Wistar divided ramondly into normal control group, model
group, epimedium group, the Ligustri Lucidi Fructus group, the blend group and the raloxifene group.
After taking retinoic acid with two weeks to build the model of osteoporosis. The same time, all of the
groups taking the same druig with oral to treatment with three weeks. Testing the contents of serum
calcium,P, AKP, StrACP, and observe the cases of femoral morphology changes.
From this study on Effect of combination of Epimedium and Ligustri Lucidi Fructus on osteoporosis rats
induced by retinoic acid, we get the result is the contents of serum calcium, P have lower abovesly in the model
group which compared to the normal group, but the activity of AKP, StrACP have a significant higher than
the normal group. The femoral head area showed reduced, narrow and sparse trabecular bones, with
typical osteoporosis-like changes. Compared to the model group, each other groups can increase the
contents of seum Ca, P , lower the level of serum AKP, StrACP, and increase the number of bone trabecula,
widen,densely woven into a network. Among these groups, the blend group of epimedium and Ligustri
Lucidi Fructus showed the significant effect.Then we can get that epimedium and Ligustri Lucidi Fructus
can corrective bone metabolic abnormalities effectivly, improve bone tissue pathology, in order to get the
strong effective of anti-osteoporosis. And the blend of epimedium & Ligustri Lucidi Fructus act a best
