Ganoderma lucidum is a famous medicinal mushroom called “Lingzhi” in China or “Reishi” in Japan. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in the orient for the prevention and treatment of various kinds of diseases, such as cancer, hepatopathy, arthritis, hypertension, neurasthenia, and chronic hepatitis ( Hsieh & Yang, 2004; Song et al., 2004;Li&Zhang, 2005).In recent years, the anticancer effects of reishi have benn demonstrated by many studies (Hitoshi et al.,1977; Wang et al.,1997; Zhng&Lin, 1999a; Gao&Zhou, 2003;Luet al.,2002) and drawn considerable is the ganodermma lucidum polysaccharides (GLPS). Until now, however, the structure-activity correlation of GLPS in anticancer action is still not well understood due to the structure diversity of the polysaccharides. At the samme time, the detailed mechanisms of anticancer action of GLPS are also still not well understood. Therefore , the advances in structure-activity relationship and mechanisms of GLPS on anticancer effects are reviewed in present paper.
Basic Structure of reishi mushroom extract
Up to date, there are about 200 polysaccharides isolated from the fruiting bodies, mycelia, or spores , or the liquid culture media of reishi. Most of GLPS are glucans with different types of glycosidic linkages, such as (1-3)-β type (Xing et al., 1996; Bao et al., 2001b), (1-6)-β type, (1-4)-α type, (1-6)-α type with some exceptions of heteroglycans. Strong antituore activities were found in various hetero-β-D-glucans, such as β-d-glucan, glucurono-β-D-glucan, arabinoxylo-β-D-glucan, xylo-β-D-glucan, mmanno-β-D-glucan and xylomanno-β-D-glucan. The others of GLPS mostly bind to protein residues, such as ganoderan A, ganoderan B, ganoderan C and GLPAI.Glucan lucidum β-glucans consisting of linear backone of β-(1-3) linked glucopyranosyl groups commonly have various degrees of branching from the C6 position.
The Basic Structure of β – Glucan on Fungus/mushroom extract

Lentinan is an important member of the (1-3) – β – D-glucan family. Lentinan and Schizophyllum polysaccharide have two or one β – (1-6) – D-glucopyranosyl side chain for every five or three main chain glucose units. They have similar structure and most of their characteristics. Hydrangea army β – glucan (SCG) is a 6-branched β – (1-3) – glucose with one branch per three main chain units, which has high antitumor activity. There are also some edible and medicinal bacteria β – glucan with β – (1-6) – glycoside linkage as the main chain. For example, the main chain of Russula albonigra β – glucan is connected by β – (1-6), and each of the three main chain glucose units has a side chain containing two β – (1-3) – D-glucopyranosyl and one terminal β – D-glucopyranosyl in three branches. It has been reported that the β – glucan of Entoloma lividoalbam is similar to the β – glucan of Flammulina velutipes. The main chain is also connected by β – (1-6), and the side chain is slightly different. For every three main chain D-glucose units, there is a side chain containing three β – (1-3) – D-glucopyranosyl and one terminal β – D-glucopyranosyl in three branches.

Antiviral and antibacterial effects for reishi mushroom extract beta glucan
