Origin of Poria Cocos Extract– Wild and Cultivated !!!
Wolfiporia cocos sclerotia were artificially cultivated using both indoor and outdoor cultivation modes and employing two substrate formulae in which the main substrate component consisted of pine sawdust, pine chips or cottonseed hulls in place of pine logs.Higher yields of sclerotia were recorded using both indoor and outdoor cultivation when a substrate containing pine sawdust combined with pine chips instead of cottonseed hulls was employed. When sclerotia were cultivated on pine sawdust-pine chips either indoors or outdoors without cover, yields were lower compared to outdoor cultivation employing a low, simple canopy.Under the latter conditions, survival rate and biological efficiency values were 92.85% and 18.25%,respectively compared to corresponding values of 96% and 22.22% for controls grown on pine wood logs.
Poria cocos look like a potato (as below picture) that may be seen growing in pine tree roots and dead barks. The common form of poria fungus is its sclerotium, most of which are in the shape of irregular chunk, sphere, compressiform, oblong, or oval.
